 Ways to Have a Healthy Holiday Season

Steps to help ensure your family remains safe, healthy and injury-free throughout the season.

1. Wash hands often to help prevent the spread of germs. Wash your hands with soap and clean running water for at least 20 seconds.

2. Dress for the weather. Wear appropriate outdoor clothing: warm layers, gloves, hats, scarves and boots.

3. Manage stress. Give yourself a break if you feel stressed out and overwhelmed. Some of the best ways to manage stress are to find support, connect socially, laugh, exercise and get plenty of rest.

4. Be tobacco-free. Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke. Smokers have greater health risks because of their tobacco use, but nonsmokers also are at risk when exposed to tobacco smoke.

5. Travel safely. Be sure your vehicle is in good running condition, get plenty of sleep, wear your seatbelt, prepare your care for winter, put the cell phone away and keep an emergency kit with you.

6. Do not drink and drive or let others drink and drive. Driving drunk puts everyone on the road in danger. Alcohol impairment is involved in about one third of accident fatalities

7. Get your flu shot. Vaccinations help prevent diseases and save lives

8. Keep an eye on the children. Give age appropriate gifts. When giving riding toys include the gift of appropriate safety gear. Keep potentially dangerous food, drinks, plants, household items and other objects out of children´┐Żs reach.

9. Practice fire safety. Most residential fires occur during the winter months, so do not leave fireplaces, space heaters, matches, food cooking on stoves or candles unattended. Check and clean the chimney and fireplace annually. Do not burn trees, wreaths or wrapping paper in the fireplace. Have an emergency fire plan and practice it regularly.

10. Avoid food poisoning. Wash hands and surfaces frequently. Keep raw meat away from fresh produce. Avoid cross-contamination by using separate utensils, cutting boards, plates etc. Ensure food is cooked to proper temperature by using a food thermometer and refrigerating foods promptly.

11. Eat healthy and be active. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, which are full of nutrients. Limit your portion sizes and foods high in fat, salt, and sugar. Also, be active for at least 30 minutes a day five days a week.
